How the Unnearthly Challenge works:
Unearthly Challenge is a Concept Art and 3D Challenge that is held once a year during the month of August and September. Artists of all ages from all over the world can participate in this event. When Unearthly Challenge begins, it is announced by email to members who are registered on GameArtisans.org or Polycount.com. Additional announcements will be made on participating forums and threads will be created so that artists can talk and ask questions about the event.

How the challenge works? Guidelines, rules, regulations, prizes, and exact submission specifications will be given on the official launch of the event.

How to join the Challenge
To join the Unearthly Challenge, you must be a registered member on GameArtisans.org. Once the competition is launched, there will be various Join buttons located accross this site and on participating forums. When the event is active, simply do the following:

  5. upload a thumbnail (you may later update thumbs at any time)
  6. Done!

Warning
- At all times, you must be logged in with "remember me" enabled to join a competition.

Why Enter?
Artists take part in online competitions for any of the following reasons:

-
To gain more confidence in themselves and their abilities through practice practice practice...
  - To get exposure and an online reputation to either kick start or enhance their careers.
  - To have fun in a friendly competitive environment where artists can achieve even greater heights of excellence.
  - To receive much needed friendly advice from professionals and amateurs in the field.
  - To gain the motivation needed to create that oh-so necessary game content portfolio.
  - And of course, to participate in a place where artists can relax, have fun and win some really sweeeet competition prizes!

How long does it take to release the final results?
Depending on the amount of finalists and on the complexity of the competition, the final results are generally released in 3-4 weeks. Why so long? Artwork and html pages have to be created for the relaunch of the finals. Interviews have to be created from scratch for exceptional artists. Sponsors must be recontacted for delivering prizes. Announcements have to be written and much more. If at any time, you believe things are taking too long, please feel free to harrass the organizer via emails or post comments on the forums.

Thumbnails - Why won't my new thumbnail show?
New uploaded competition thumbnails must wait for approval by an admin before they are shown to the public. Why are approvals necessary? To prevent malicious advertising and/or pornography.

FireFox Users - Warning - If your thumbnail is approved, and if you get a confirmation email that states your thumbnail has been accepted, it still takes 2-5 page refreshes [F5] to get your new thumbnail to show up. Please refresh your page before resubmitting your thumbnail over and over and over and over again.

About prizes
Prizes are always awarded to any champion(s) around the world. However, if you are under the age of 18, we must have your parents consent before prizes can be delivered. Additionally, if you are under 18 years of age, all prizes are shipped or paid to your parents.

Generally, prizes are dispensed within one month of the competition's completion. For cash prizes, paypal is our preferred method of payment.

About sponsors
Sponsors other than GCCore are responsible for sending the prizes to the winners. GCCore cannot be held responsible, nor can we provide a substitute in case prizes are no longer available or if sponsors have retracted their sponsorship at any time during the contest.

All artwork must be original
Unless otherwise specified, all artwork created for a GCCore event (GameArtisans.org competitions, Dominance War, Unearthly Challenge) must be specifically made for the competition or event. You may not use any old models, concepts, ideas previous sketched on paper, or use any pieces from old models.

Deadline extensions, WHY!?
GCCore always reserves the right to cancel or extend the contest at any time for whatever reason, without further notice or advance warning.

Teams and how they work
During the Unearthly Challenge, artists are allowed to enter a 3d competition as a team of 3 maximum. Each artist can contribute what he or she wishes to the project, however each team must provide a breakdown image that documents which artist did what for the project.

For the concept art category, no teams are allowed. Everything must be done by one artist.

Artwork ownership
All art, sketches, 3d models, and photographs submitted to a GCCore event remains yours to do with as you wish.

Is joining multiple times allowed?
You may only join each category, concepts or 3d, once. You may not join multiple teams or enter with multiple user names.

W.I.P Competition, what does this mean?
W.I.P stands for Work-In-Progress. All GCCore competitions are w.i.p based. Everyone is required to show their work and demonstrate how they made everything in their w.i.p thread. If you hide your work (termed "Hidden Ninja"), you would only hurt your reputation in the eyes of other professionals and you could potentially be disqualified.

W.I.P, Do I really have to show my work in progress?
Yes, you must absolutely show your w.i.p work. Artists that wait to the last day to enter the event and show their work can potentially be disqualified. Ninjas (people who hide their progress) hurt the spirit of the competition and the artists who enter them. Please show your work well in advance.

How can I show images in my forum threads?
There are two ways to make images show in your forum threads.

1. Upload your images to your personal website and then insert your image's url into these tags

2. Use the attach file feature found in the advance post page on gameartisans.org or polycount.com. You can not use quick reply to attach images, you must press on Go Advanced to find the attach files section. When you have this attach file page open, find the file on your hardrive, and press upload. Make sure you follow the attach file size limits for each participating forum.

Polygons and tris, What are they?
Competition guidelines are always listed in tris. Example: 5000 tris maximum. If you have one tri, and it's a square, this means your software is counting it wrong. A tri is a triangle so if you see a square, this means you have two tris (two triangles form a square). Always make sure you are counting tris.

Lighting and shadows, what is allowed?
Advanced lights, raytraced shadows, mental ray and various Game Engines renders are all allowed for the Unearthly Challenge.

3d programs, which are we allowed to use for this?
You may use any program that makes 3d. There are no limits.
