Last year, Unearthly Challenge wowed the video game industry with some of the most fantastic environment art pieces ever seen. Following the success of an annual international game character art competition, Dominance War, GCCore Arts, founder of Dominance War and GameArtisans.org, sets out to create another ground breaking, high profile contest for game environment artists around the world – Unearthly Challenge 2009.
Before 2008, never had such an environment contest been run; pitting two rival online game art communities, GameArtisans.org and Polycount.com head to head in an epic contest. The results were nothing short of spectacular:  Hundreds of participants, thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise prizes, and a dozen top-notch and incredible winners!

In 2008, the Grand Champions, Bram Eulaers and Jeffrey M.de Guzman, were chosen based off their skillful execution, sophistication, and the overall presentation of their pieces. Judges included professional artists from sponsoring game developers like 38 Studios, Cryptic Studios, Valve, Big Huge Games, Streamline Studios, A2M, Liquid Development, Threewave and Shadows in Darkness.
This year, Unearthly Challenge is back, and it's here with more prizes, more participating communities, revised rules, and more themes!  In 2009, the Second Annual Unearthly Challenge introduces two additional online communities, Cgtalk.ru and Leewiart.com, and two additional languages, Chinese and Russian. Once again, artists will work in teams to create the most Unearthly game-ready environment imaginable, but gone are the pre-made concepts of last year. This year, as a new chapter in the series unfolds, the role of concept artists shall truly be unleashed!
Like Dominance War, Unearthly Challenge has set out to raise the bar in terms of quality of entries, scope of prizes, and communities’ involvement. GCCore Arts  committed to making a fun learning environment for everyone and no other international game art contest encourages more feedback and artist-to-artist interaction than Unearthly Challenge and Dominance War.
With the contest set to kick off in late August 2009, it's going to be a busy fall! Joining Unearthly Challenge is free, easy, and as in all GCCore events, you retain all the rights to your work - just check back in August for more information. Until then, why not take a peek at our participating communities that have all signed up to compete in 2009!
